20/01/2001 Malta is set to become a center of e-commerce activity
Malta is setting itself up as a major online gaming jurisdiction. Almost a year ago, the government of Malta passed legislation enabling online betting centers to be set up in the country. In addition, the government made provisions from the Income Tax Act written specifically targeted at international companies.
Major industry players from around the world, including big names such as William Hill and Ladbrokes have expressed an interest in Malta. To date, 12 companies have been licensed and the local Gaming Board is processing 20 others. The board is optimistic that the year 2001 will see a fresh influx of betting companies.
Lowtax.net reports, ?As a major offshore jurisdiction with many tens of thousands of offshore enterprises already installed, including many trading companies, it is only a matter of time before Malta becomes a center of e-commerce activity. The islands' geographical location (European time-zone), good telecommunications links, sophisticated business infrastructure and the low-cost, English-speaking, highly-educated work-force are all factors which will attract the sales, marketing and administrative departments of European retail operations.?
