02/05/2001 US Army to install web-filtering software
The U.S. Army is installing web-filtering software at more than 100 military posts worldwide to monitor its ranks and to prevent personnel from viewing sites that provide pornography, and other content considered inappropriate on government computers. Gambling, too, is considered inappropriate by Army standards.
The US$1.8 million software is being purchased from Websense, an Internet management solutions company based in San Diego, California. Websense claims that its software not only improves employee productivity by eliminating distractions but also can be relied upon to ''reduce the liabilities associated with Internet use.''
However, each base will have the ability to select what material is deemed suitable for viewing, according to Army policy, of course, said Stephen Larsen, a spokesman for the Army Communications-Electronics Command Systems Management Center in New Jersey.
