Casino Dictionary

Action - the amount bet by a casino player while playing: raise, bet, fold, check or call

Aces Up - 2 pairs, aces and any other kind of poker sequence

Active - a casino gambler still playing

All Blue - flush of spades or clubs

All Pink - flush of either hearts or diamonds

Anchor - the user sitting before the casino dealer. He is the last player to play before the casino dealer. He makes the final decision and thus his name.

Ante - the minimum bet that each casino player must place into the pot before a new hand begins.

Baccarat - a casino card game. To win one must have a hand that is closest to 9 discounting all units of 10.

Back Raise - Re-raising another's' raise

Bad Beat - If you are beaten by a very low hand

Banker - the casino player who notes the other better's action. (relevant to the game of Pai Gow)

Bankroll - your complete sum of money for one playing session

Bar the 12 - changes the twelve to a push on the 'don't pass' bar (relevant to the game of craps)

Base - the space on the dice table where most of the bets are set and paid.

Base Dealer - online casino dice dealer who is in charge of one of the bases.

Basic Strategy - the statistically right manner to play blackjack to heighten your odds.

Bet - gamble or wager, placing a wager into the pot at any one of the betting rounds in poker

Betting Limits - on a single bet, the smallest or biggest amount of money that can be laid

Betting Right - wagering with the shooter or on the pass line

Betting Wrong - betting on the Don't Pass Line or against the shooter.

Blackjack - a game of cards. In this casino game the players try to beat the online casino dealer by getting closer to 21. This casino game is also known as 21.

Blank - A card that has no value for your specific hand

Blackjack Hand - when a hand's first two cards equal a sum of 21.

Blind Bet - a wager that users must make because of their betting position.

Bluff - To raise or to bet even though you know you can't win, casino players fake having a strong hand when de facto they have a weak one in the hope of driving out other players with a stronger hand (relevant to poker)

Board card or Community Card - (relevant to Hold'em or Omaha Poker) a common card placed in the center of the casino table that all players need to use

Box - the scope of the dice table controlled by the boxman. It is also the area where casino players place the center bets (relevant to craps)

Boxcars - a situation of rolling two sixes. (relevant to craps)

Boxman - the online casino dealer, who is in charge of the craps table .

Bring-in - this is the bet that the casino player with the lowest face-up card must make in the first round of betting. (relevant to seven-card stud poker)

Bump - raising a bet

Burn Card - any card which is not entered into play but placed in the discard rack. Generally, after shuffling and cutting the deck, one card is burned.

Bust - if in blackjack your cards add upto over 21 you lose. This is popularly known as break.

Buy-in - A minimum sum needed to enter a game of poker

Card Counting - a strategy used primarily in blackjack that helps decrease the house odds by counting the number of high and low cards dealt out

Caribbean Stud Poker - a game of poker using five cards and all the casino players play against the house

Chase - To pass without placing a wager or to play with a hand that is weaker than (at least) one player

Check - Forfeiting your right to bet first

Check-raise - Forfeiting your right to bet, but raising the bet if another casino player places a bet

Chips - tokens used instead of money for betting

Cold - a slot machine that one continually loses at or a casino player who continues to lose

Cold Call - Calling bets before any other casino player in each round

Collection - A casino game's fee

Collection Drop - A casino game's fee for each and every hand

Color Change - To ask to swap the chips (change their denomination)

Common Card - When no cards remain in a casino game, an open card is dealt to all players and they all use it.

Complete Hand - a hand of poker containing of all five cards. (straight, flush, straight flush, or full house)

Complete the Bet- Raising a forced bet or an all-in bet in limit poker.

Craps - a term for the roll od dice for the following numbers: 2, 3, or 12.

Credit Button - a click-button in online casino poker that the user can click on to bank the money he as won and to use these to play without having to pay more

Crew - dealers of a game of dice or craps

Croupier - dealers of roulette and baccarat

Cut - after shuffling the cards, dividing the deck of cards into two and inverting them

Cut Card - a plastic card used to cut the deck or a different colour card or another name for the last card

Cut-Card - another name for the last card (the bottom one)

Cycle - in video poker it's the statistically predicted average number of hands dealt per top jackpot, usually a royal flush.

Dice - two or more equally numbered cubes

Die - singular for dice, a cube with numbers 1-6 on each side.

Discard - Dumping cards to take others instead

Discard Rack - area of the table where the used cards are placed.

Don't Come Bet - a bet placed on the Don't Come Bar. Same rules as the Don't Pass Line except it is placed after the Come-Out Roll.

Don't Pass Bet - a bet placed prior to the Come-Out Roll that a seven will be rolled before a point is repeated.

Don't Pass Line - area of the table where the Don't Pass bets are placed. Also known as the Back Line.

Double Down - to increase a wager after the first two cards are drawn, in exchange for receiving only one more card, by placing an amount equal to the original bet on the layout. Also known as Double Up.

Down cards - Cards dealt face-down

Dozen Bet - a bet on twelve numbers in roulette, i.e. 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36.

Draw - in draw poker, the second round of cards that are dealt or replacing cards in your hand

Draw Button - allows video poker player to draw up to five new cards.

Drawing Dead - Replacing cards even though someone else has a hand that will beat you

Drop Box - on a casino table, the box that serves as a repository for cash, markers, and chips.

Edge - the higher odds of a casino over the player in any game

Even Money - a wager that if you win gives you back the amount you wagered plus your original bet

Expected Return - in online casino poker it's the average cash figure you can win on a set play for a set type of wager

Expected Win Rate - a percentage of the total amount of money wagered that you can expect to win or lose over time.

Face Cards - the king, queen or jack of each suite.

Fixed Limit - (relevant to limit poker) a structure where there's a set limit to bet by

Flat Top - those slot machines which have a fixed amount as jackpot

Float - the online casino bank.

Flop - The initial 3 cards your are handed out at poker

Flashed cards - Partially exposed cards

Flush - (relevant to poker) 5 cards of the same fold. Also termed as forfeiting playing in a specific poker session

Fold - when you, the casino player, decides not to bet and drop out (relevant to poker)

Forced Bet - A bet that you must place to begin the action in poker

Four Of A Kind - four cards of identical rank (popularly called quads)

Full House - a hand made up of a pair and a triple (relevant to poker)

Full Pay - generally the best win system offered for a particular game (relevant to online casinos poker)

Free roll - Chances of risk-free winning

Full house - A poker hand made up of a pair and a triple (three of a kind)

Hand - all the cards that you hold

Hit - to ask and receive an additional card. This card is also called a hit.

Hole Card - the online casino's hidden and unseen card

Inside Bet - bettin on a single number including 0 or 00 or any such combination (relevant to roulette)

Insurance - a side bet in blackjack that's offered when the casino dealer's upcard is an ace. If the dealer has a blackjack, the bet is paid 2-1. If the dealer does not, the insurance bet loses.

Joker:
In ace-to-5 poker: the lowest card that has no rank
In high draw poker: a partially wild card used for flushes, aces and straights

Kansas City lowball (deuce-to-7) - Type of low-draw poker where the highest hand is 7-5-4-3-2. Flushes and straights are weaker.

Kill (Kill Blind) - Generally a blind that reaches double the size of a big blind. Occasionally, it increases the blind and limits it to 50%.

Kill Button - button indicating the casino player to kill the pot if he has won two straight pots

Kicker - In poker the strongest card that is not a part of any sequence

Kill Pot - Pot containing a forced kill by a two-time straight pot winner.

Let It Ride - a game of poker

Live Blind - Blind bet that allows a casino player to raise if none before has done so

Loose game - Poker where each round includes a large percent of the casino players

Loose/Tight Slots - If you play more hands than is considered normal or when referring to slot machines means either a larg or small payoff tendency

Lowball - Poker where the lowest hand wins

Low Card - (relevant to 7-card stud) the lowest upcard needed in order to be eligible to bet

Mini-Baccarat - a mini version of baccarat. Fewer casino players play this version but follow the same rules as baccarat

Middle Pair - Pairing the second highest card

Misdeal - if there occurs a fault in the dealing of the cards and they need to be reshuffled to start playing poker again

Missed Blind - When your turn comes and you don't place a bet that you were required to

Monkey - local term for a card that equals ten

Muck - Discarding a hand or the pile of cards that all poker players exchanged.

Natural - In Blackjack, an ace and a card that values ten in the original hand. In Baccarat, an eight or nine received in the first two hands.

No-Limit - When you can place unlimited amounts of tokens on any bet

Non-negotiable - a promotional chip that one cannot cash in

Nut - a fixed amount that a casino player sets out to win.

Nuts - The strongest possible hand

Odds - ratio of statistical probabilities or the amount a bet pays

Off - bets that are not working.

One-Roll Bets - wagers that win or lose depending on the next roll of the dice.

Opener - The casino player who placed the 1st non-mandatory wager

Opener Button - Button indicating the particular casino player who opened a specific pot in a game of draw

Openers - (relevant to jacks-or-better draw) cards held by the casino player who opens the pot that show the hand qualifies to be opened. (For instance if you bet first and have a pair of kings; the kings are called your openers.)

Option - If you have a blind, you are given a choice to raise

Outs - The cards that will make you win

Outside Bets - roulette bets located on the outside part of the layout. They involve betting 12 to 18 numbers at one time and result in a lower payout.

Pair - any two cards that are equal in sum or rank

Palette - the flat spoon-like instrument used by casino dealers to scoop cards on the baccarat table

Pass - to abstain from betting, you will have to fold or refusing to place a bet

Passive - If instead of raising and betting, you check and call other poker opponents hands

Pat - If in a game of draw, you don't draw any cards

Play the board - If in a game of hold'em poker you use all five community cards to create a sequence

Pot - the accumulated cash in the middle of the casino table. The winner takes it all.

Pot-Limit - The maximum amount of money you are allowed to bet (all the players included) in a specific casino game

Protected Hand- Either placing on top of your cards some object or holding them in your hand to prevent a fouled hand

Punter - a casino player.

Push - this signifies a tie or a standoff. This happens when the hand of the casino player and the online casino have the same total. Neither is declared the winner and the money does'nt change hands

Qualifier - this is the minimum criteria that a hand must meet to take part in the pot (relevant to poker)

Rake - the fee charged by any online casino for playing a hand of poker. Generally it's a percentage (5-10%) or flat fee that the online casino takes from the pot after a round of betting

Raise - in poker, a casino player raises by matching the previous bet and then betting more, to increase the stake for the remaining casino players.

Rank - a cards worth

Re-raising - Raising another poker player's raise

River - The final card dealt to any casino player

Royal Flush - an ace-high straight flush (the best possible hand - relevant to poker)

Scoop - Winning both the low and the high portions of a pot in a split-pot poker game

Showdown - Finding out which casino player has won the round of poker. Each player reveals his cards and the casino player with the strongest sequence wins.

Shuffle - Mixing cards up before dealing out a hand.

Soft Hand - signifies a hand that contains an ace that can be counted as 1 or 11 (relevant to blackjack)

Split Pot - When either because the casino players agreed or because of a tie, the pot has to be divided between them

Stack - The casino players token which make up a pile

Stand - to decline accepting another card

Steal - to win the round by bluffing (relevant to poker), causing a casino opponent to fold or raise when you are bluffing

Straight - hand which has five consecutive ranked cards (relevant to poker)

Straight Flush - hand of five consecutive ranked cards of the same suit (relevant to poker)

Stub - The part of the deck which hasn't been dealt.

Stud Poker - a poker game with no draw

Surrender - to decide to drop out of the hand because of weak cards. This means that you lose half of your bet but you get to save the other half (relevant to blackjack)

Three Of A Kind - three cards of the same rank.

Token - the casino coins used to play slot machines.

Triple - three of a kind (relevant to poker)

Two Pairs - hand made up of two pairs and a single card (relevant to poker)

Turn - In community cards the 4th card dealt

Turn Card - (relevant to Omaha or hold'em) The 4th street card

Upcard - the casino dealer's face-up card (relevant to stud games)

Wager - Betting or raising. The tokens or chips used for play are also termed wager.

Weak - A casino player who forfeits too many hands and continuously folds.

Whale - casino player who gambles with a lot of cash

Wild Card - a joker or other card that one can use as any other card to complete your hand.
