Casino Myths

As you play at an online casino, you might hear various stories and myths about playing and about the casino in general. I have gathered a few of these myths:

  1. You will lose at times. The odds are always in the favour of the casino. Though this doesn't mean that you will always lose, be prepared to lose for you will.
  2. Do not guess. Instead make your decide based on the best mathematical odds. Many don't agree on this point but these are also those who eventually lose big.
  3. If you play for a long time you will lose in the long run. You will sometimes win and sometimes lose; to be successful you should play only for short periods. If you are good at blackjack, video poker or poker you could stay on for long times at the casino and gain a long term advantage, but do this only if you are really good.
  4. As the complexity of the casino game rises, the odds of the casino decrease. Thus play this game properly and you have a good chance of winning. This is true when playing complicated versions of craps, video poker, blackjack and baccarat at your casino provided you play these games well.
  5. Likewise, the simpler the games, the odds of the casino are higher. This is true when playing games of luck lick roulette, the wheel of fortune, slots and keno at your favourite casino.
  6. Don't wager away cash that you cannot afford to lose or in other words play only with affordable money at your casino. In addition, set a time limit for you playing and a money limit.
  7. Do not minimize the value of your bets by insuring them. You will only lose instead of winning. Many casino players take insurance against the house especially in blackjack. This bet carries an edge that varies from 5.88% to 7.47%. Another option generally taken by casino players is insurance in craps. This bet carries with it an edge of 11.11% but some casino players still decide to insure. But these bets are not necessary because the risks aren't too great anyway. Before you know all your insurance paid will add up to a high amount of casino gain and your loss. In the long run, it would be better to simply take your chances with the roll of the dice or the cards instead of relying on insurance.
  8. Casino games are all games of chances and you will not be able to find a sure system to beat them for such a system doesn't exist. Don't even try and find one - ask experienced casino players and they too will tell you this. You will, though, find many systems that offer you huge wins for such games like roulette, craps or even the lottery by gibing up on the tiny wins and concentrating on the huge winnings. But none of these can defeat these casino games simply because they are all based on sheer luck and statistical probabilities.
  9. Check out the odds and casino payouts before playing. Be aware that rules of different casino games vary as well as the pay-outs especially if you are playing video poker or blackjack. I suggest, as you can imagine, you play at a casino and at a game that gives you the best possible odds.
  10. Don't bet on the side bets or the gimmicks. By this I refer to those you can bet at Let it Ride and Caribbean stud poker. Though you might see that these bets are placed often, you should be aware that the casino house odds are enormous and your chances of winning are slim. If you are lured into placing some gamble because the casino has offered you different rules for that gamble, beware that they haven't changed some other rule as well. Remember the casino makes its money from players like you.
  11. Playing at a casino is for fun only. Keep it as such. If you are enjoying yourself and are having fun -great. But if this moderation turns into an excessive and obsessive pastime - you need to stop. Don't follow the myth that you can beat these casino games by changing the size of your bet to play the odds. Heard of the "law of large Numbers"? This mathematical law states that the more you play the ration of money lost will be nearly equal to the money won regardless of what system you play by. The Encyclopedia Britannica agrees on this subject as well. It states, "A common gamblers' fallacy called 'the doctrine of the maturity of the chances' (or 'Monte Carlo fallacy') falsely assumes that each play in a game of chance is not independent of the others and that a series of outcomes of one sort should be balanced in the short run by other possibilities. A number of 'systems' have been invented by gamblers based largely on this fallacy; casino operators are happy to encourage the use of such systems and to exploit any gambler's neglect of the strict rules of probability and independent plays."

Remember that a casino will not be able to stay in business if its players win all the time. It profits from casino players and it even sometimes allows these systems publicity for any casino knows that eventually sure-win systems will only 'win' them more and more money.

Play accordingly!
